The Enoshima Touroku (江の島灯籠) or Enoshima Lanterns is an illumination event that allows visitors to experience the evening coolness while surrounded by 1,000 lanterns of various sizes inspired by Enoshima’s folklore and the illuminations at Enoshima Shrine.

Over the years, I have visited this event multiple times, but since 2023 year it comes with an addition, light projection. VELVETA DESIGN, a company specializing in spatial creation, is conducting an illumination installation called “Kou no Emakimono(光の絵巻)” (Scroll of Light) on the Enoshima island.
Enoshima for introductions is an island nearby Tokyo, dedicated to the Indian goddess, Saraswati or Benzaiten. In todays times, Enoshima is often associated with romance and love, making it a popular destination for couples and an ideal spot for date nights. The Enoshima illumination event typically takes place from July to August, allowing visitors to experience the magical atmosphere during the summer evenings. The lights are illuminated from 18:00 to 20:30 on regular days and extended to 21:00 on weekends, holidays, and specific dates. The enchanting lights cast a magical glow over the island, creating a romantic and dreamy atmosphere that captivates visitors and adds a touch of wonder to the summer nights.
Illumination aside, allow me to speak on something I always look forward to at Enoshima. Enoshima’s feline friends add an adorable charm to this scenic island. As visitors explore the tranquil pathways and lush gardens, they are often greeted by the sight of friendly and curious cats. These feline residents have become an integral part of the local community, and their playful antics and affectionate nature make them beloved companions to both residents and tourists alike. The illumination event originated from the first event held at the former Enoshima Observatory Lighthouse (now Enoshima Sea Candle) in November 1999. The illumination event also includes various entertainment activities, live performances, and food stalls, enhancing the festive atmosphere and making it a delightful experience for families and couples alike. This event, created collaboratively by the local community, seamlessly blended the beauty of Shonan’s ocean and sky with captivating designs integrated into the natural surroundings.
With its unique and mesmerizing displays, it has consistently ranked among the top in Kanto’s three major illuminations and many illumination rankings.

The illumination at Dragon Place is truly beautiful. Established in 1993, the Wadatsumi no Miya (龍宮) is where Wadatsumi Daijin (龍宮大神) is enshrined. It is believed that the dragon god has been living here since Enoshima was formed. It is said that because the shrine is located directly above the Enoshima Iwaya Caves, strong energy surrounds the shrine.
One of the highlights of the event is the breathtaking view of Mount Fuji from Enoshima, which adds an extra layer of magnificence to the already enchanting atmosphere. The sight of Japan’s iconic mountain against the backdrop of the glowing sky is a sight to behold and has inspired countless artists and photographers over the years.
The evening view of Mount Fuji from Enoshima during the summer is simply enchanting. As the sun begins to set, casting a warm golden hue across the horizon, the silhouette of Japan’s beloved mountain emerges like a majestic dream in the distance. The gentle waves of the ocean reflect the colors of the sky, creating a serene and picturesque scene. As the twilight sky gradually deepens, Mount Fuji’s outline becomes more pronounced, standing tall against the painted canvas of the summer evening.
