This is my personal experiences of travelling on the Tokaido Shinkansen for the past 30 years and always "looking out" for Mount Fuji which is a hit or a miss. What are the odds of being able to see the mountain, how to increase the chances, where to sit in the Shinkansen, lets find out.

A few days ago, I was on the Shinkansen, hoping to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji. If you've lived in Japan long enough, you know the ritual. As the train approaches the Shin-Fuji area, people quietly lean toward the window. Cameras are ready. Here is what I captured. Beautiful, ain't it? Dont blame me if you do not see the mountain.

From the Mount Fuji side of the Tokaido Shinkansen route, the odds are surprisingly lower than tourists imagine. Fuji is a diva. Half the year the mountain is hiding behind haze like a celebrity avoiding the paparazzi. I analyzed photographs I have taken over decades, here is what I can deduce.

Best season by far with the cold dry air allowing crisp visibility. Morning trains are especially good to get a blue sky backdrop and I would say that get into the first Shinkansen of the day at 6 a.m. The below is with the window seat framing from January.

Weather is clear, but the snow cap on the mountain varies massively depending on how much snowfall the mountain received in that time period. December is when the snow cap is forming and it can lead to as massive a variation as below. Same first week of December compared in 2019 and 2024. 2019 is like "WOW", 2024 is like "well, hmmm"

Assuming you are travelling from Tokyo to Osaka direction, book the seats on the two seater right hand side to get a slimpse of the mountain. Similarly heading towards Tokyo, book the left hand side two seater. The most safe is the end of January time when the snow peak is at its maximum!

Can still be good, but haze and clouds increase. My personal take is thaat Cherry blossom season fools people into thinking “perfect Japan weather” means perfect Fuji weather. Nope. Here is one the one in March on a lucky day! And here’s the funny thing: many long-term Japan residents like me, have taken the Shinkansen 100+ times and still get irrationally excited when Fuji suddenly appears. It never fully gets old. There’s this collective silent “おっ” or "wow" moment in the carriage.

What I have always tried iis that before I head out, I look at the Twitter or x.com feed and sort it on the "Latest" to check the latest posts. You will find someone posting the "real time" views of the mountain. You can mentally prepare in advance, but still allow for a rare cloud suddenly disrupting your day.

Honestly brutal for visibility and more importantly without the snow cap, why even bother. The humidity, clouds, rainy season, you may only glimpse the base. Fuji is for climbing, not viewing in my personal view. As you can see below, you can view the fine contours of the mountain without the snow cap, which is also one way of enjoying the mountain. It still feels mystical (console yourself with that thought)
Net-net, Uncertainty is where experience is born. If something like Mount Fuji became permanently available and fully predictable, its emotional value would, may or might diminish. Seriously, but I feel Scarcity and uncertainty create anticipation; anticipation creates meaning. May be too much, but if Fuji were permanently hovering outside every train window like a screensaver, people would stop photographing it within two weeks. We, humans adapt absurdly fast, basically emotional compression algorithms with snacks.

Improves steadily after typhoon season. Later the part of the autumn, the better it is. But expect scattered snow and not that vanilla ice topping. Its still beautiful, personally. With the philosophical element I described above, a long term expat like me usually thinks like "too much uncertainty becomes anxiety, but, too much certainty becomes numbness". Although not directly related, but, I also remember the ex prime minister Junichiro Koizumi said when he resigned as the PM at the height of his career. He said cherry blossoms are valuable because they bloom only for a week in a year. If they were to stay like that throughout the year, their value would diminish. Similar in many ways to Mount FUji too. A completely optimized world risks becoming emotionally flat. Friction, rarity, timing, impermanence those are not bugs in human experience.They are part of our "hopeful engine" of life

I have been lucky in 2025, when I was taking pics of the Mount Fuji from my bullet train. Another bullet train passed from the opposite side and I instantly took multiple live photos and caught this RAREST of photographs where I could get a bullet train photograph with Fuji in the background from a bullet train!
I took a frame out of that Live photo and it is below. This is my most favorite and RARE photograph.
